The troubles of SATA
The use of SATA hard drives is now * * * temporary due to their relatively low price. The application serves as a near-line storage and backup for enterprise disk to disk, but nowadays, there are also many cases where users use SATA hard drives for primary data online storage, because it can save * * *. SATA hard drives have even become the main storage device for large databases. In other fields that used to use FC hard drives, SATA hard drives can now be seen. Obviously, users are extremely concerned about storage space units, but it seems to have overlooked some reliability issues.
Fortunately, RAID manufacturers have now developed SATA products that support RAID-6 controllers to dispel these concerns. RAID6 has added * * * independent parity information blocks, unlike RAID5, which only has one parity block, allowing two hard drives to fail simultaneously.
But RAID6 also brings with it the need to allocate more disk space and provide more bandwidth between the controller and hard drive than RAID5. We use the data provided on the hard drive manufacturer Seagate's website as an example. The average transfer speed of a 750GB SATA hard drive is 78MB/s. If you are using RAID5, you need a transfer speed of 702MB/s to make the RAID set work properly, but if you are using RAID6, the average speed should reach at least 780MB/s, or provide 10% additional bandwidth. The same speed issue also exists in applications that require a large amount of read and write operations, including video and audio input/output streams. Another application that may be overlooked is database indexing.
There is no doubt that SATA hard drives provide a lower unit of storage space * * *, but due to fewer input and output times per second compared to FC hard drives, and various indicators slightly inferior to FC hard drives, bit error rate, hard drive speed, and longer search time, enterprises need to consider more factors when deciding which hard drive to purchase.
Performance requirements for connecting components
What additional investments do we need to make when we want to achieve the required performance?
Assuming that we need to build an environment with input and output streams that meet certain performance requirements and require a transmission rate in MB or GB per second, we must be equipped with the following hardware.
