1967年日本成立了人工手研究會（現改名為倣生機構研究會），同年召開了日本首屆機器人學術會。
1970年在美國召開了第一屆國際工業機器人學術會議。1970年以後，機器人的研究得到迅速廣泛的普及。
1973年，辛辛那提·米拉克隆公司的理查德·豪恩制造了第一臺由小型計算機控制的工業機器人，它是液壓驅動的，能提升的有效負載達45公斤。
到了1980年，工業機器人才真正在日本普及，故稱該年為“機器人元年”。
隨後，工業機器人在日本得到了巨大發展，日本也因此而贏得了“機器人王國的美稱”。
自治潛水器
隨著計算機技術和人工智能技術的飛速發展，使機器人在功能和技術層次上有了很大的提高，移動機器人和機器人的視覺和觸覺等技術就是典型的代表。由於這些技術的發展，推動了機器人概念的延伸。80年代，將具有感覺、思考、決策和動作能力的係統稱為智能機器人，這是一個概括的、含義廣泛的概念。這一概念不但指導了機器人技術的研究和應用，而且又賦予了機器人技術向深廣發展的巨大空間，水下機器人、空間機器人、空中機器人、地面機器人、微小型機器人等各種用途的機器人相繼問世，許多夢想成為了現實。將機器人的技術（如傳感技術、智能技術、控制技術等）擴散和滲透到各個領域形成了各式各樣的新機器——機器人化機器。當前與信息技術的交互和融合又產生了“軟件機器人”、“網絡機器人”的名稱，這也說明了機器人所具有的創新活力。採集機器人
在林業生產中，林木球果的採集一直是個難題，國內外雖已研制出了多種球果採集機，如升降機、樹幹振動機等，但由於這些機械本身都存在著這樣或那樣的缺點，所以沒有被廣泛使用。目前在林區仍主要採用人工上樹手持工具來採摘林木球果，這樣不僅工人勞動強度大，作業性差，生產率低，而且對母樹損壞較多。為了解決這個問題，東北林業大學研制出了林木球果採集機器人。該機器人可以在較短的林木球果成熟期大量採摘種子，對森林的生態保護、森林的更新以及森林的可持續發展等方面都有重要的意義。
林木球果採集機器人由機械手、行走機構、液壓驅動係統和單片機控制係統組成。其中機械手由回轉盤、立柱、大臂、小臂和採集爪組成，整個機械手共有5個自由度。在採集林木球果時，將機器人停放在距母樹3－5米處，操縱機械手回轉馬達使機械手對準其中一棵母樹。然後單片機係統控制機械手大、小臂同時柔性升起達到高度，採集爪張開並擺動，對準要採集的樹枝，大小臂同時運動，使採集爪沿著樹枝生長方向趨近1.5－2米，然後採集爪的梳齒夾攏果枝，大小臂帶動採集抓爪按原路向後捋回，梳下枝上的球果，完成一次採摘，然後再重復上述動作。連捋數枝後，將球果倒入拖拉機後部的集果箱中。採集完一棵樹，再轉動機械手對準下一棵。
試驗表明，這種球果採集機器人每臺能採集落葉松果500公斤，是人工上樹採摘的30－35倍。另外，更換不同齒距的梳齒則可用於各種林木球果的採集。這種機器人採摘林木球果時，對母樹破壞較小，採凈率高，對森林生態環境的保護及林業的可持續發展有益。
機器學習(Machine Learning)是研究計算機怎樣模擬或實現人類的學習行為，以獲取新的知識或技能，重新組織已有的知識結構使之不斷改善自身的性能。它是人工智能的核心，是使計算機具有智能的根本途徑，其應用遍及人工智能的各個領域，它主要使用歸納、綜合而不是演譯。
機器學習是關於理解與研究學習的內在機制、建立能夠通過學習自動提高自身水平的計算機程序的理論方法的學科。近年來機器學習理論在諸多應用領域得到成功的應用與發展，已成為計算機科學的基礎及熱點之一。採用機器學習方法的計算機程序被成功用於機器人下棋程序、語音識別、信用卡欺詐監測、自主車輛駕駛、智能機器人等應用領域，除此之外機器學習的理論方法還被用於大數據集的數據挖掘這一領域。實際上，在任何有經驗可以積累的地方，機器學習方法均可發揮作用。
