DCS在控制上的大特點是依靠各種控制、運算模塊的靈活組態，可實現多樣化的控制策略以滿足不同情況下的需要，使得在單元組合儀表實現起來相當繁瑣與復雜的命題變得簡單。隨著企業提出的高柔性、益的要求，以經典控制理論為基礎的控制方案已經不能適應，以多變量預測控制為代表的控制策略的提出和成功應用之後，過程控制受到了過程工業界的普遍關注。需要強調的是，廣泛應用各種控制與優化技術是挖掘並提升DCS綜合性能有效、直接、也是具價值的發展方向。
在實際過程控制係統中，基於PID控制技術的係統佔80%以上，PID回路運用優劣在實現裝置平穩、、運行中起到舉足輕重的作用，各DCS廠商都以此作為搶佔市場的有力競爭砝碼，開發出各自的PID自整定軟件。另外，根據DCS的控制功能，在基本的PID算法基礎上，可以開發各種改進算法，以滿足實際工業控制現場的各種需要，諸如帶死區的PID控制、積分分離的PID控制、微分先行的PID控制、不完全微分的PID控制、具有邏輯選擇功能的PID控制等等
