要談大型PLC先從其發展源起開始，工業自動化的興起，讓從60年代後期到70年代初期發展的PLC快速抬頭，PLC是NC(數值控制)型工作機械、機械人等各類自動機械的控制裝置，所以也被稱作PC(ProgramableController)、Sequencer(程序器)、SequencerController(程序控制器)。隨著微電子學日新日異的技術發展，加上使用高度微處理器及記憶體元件，因此PLC超越了當初單純代替轉換式程序控制盤的機能。在復雜的自動化產業設備中，它不但提供了運算控制、資訊處理、高機能、的網路，而且也可以和其他的控制組件、FA電腦一起使用，建構一個係統完整的機械設備。
