ABB crane control designer NTK addresses these issues by providing a * * * safety system for tower cranes - the company's * * * crane cab has circular or oval cab windows that are easily recognizable. NTK is currently installing a control system based on ABB safety PLC. The system continuously monitors load torque and working and collision areas in real-time - achieving the safety level of SIL3 (IEC 61508 and 62061) PLe (ISO 13849-1) function. It provides real-time and * * * * visibility for operators of all critical crane status indicators. The movement speed of the crane is now also controlled by a fully dynamic calculation of the load torque.
The safety PLC used - ABB's AC500-S - simplifies the control upgrade project due to its built-in mathematical functions. Unlike other safety controller options, PLC supports trigonometric mathematical functions, greatly accelerating static and dynamic crane load safety calculations. The position of the car, the radius of the crane, and the load and wind conditions are all displayed through NTK's graphical touch screen user interface.
The safety PLC performs complex safety algorithm functions to monitor critical parameters. NTK has always been at the forefront of crane control safety. For this iteration of its control system, NTK has agreed to become one of ABB's testers, upgrading the control system to a dual PLC architecture of AC500-S safety PLC with new mathematical functions. This allows NTK to use the new secure PLC early in the development cycle. In return, NTK developers provided ABB with feedback on PLC and its development tools.
The new control system of NTK took approximately 12 months to market. However, this includes the period when it had its own pre release with a crane OEM customer - they provided NTK with their feedback on the new safety control system. The new security code itself was developed in a relatively short period of about three months - largely thanks to the quality of ABB programming tools.
AC500-S provides a * * * security certified structured text programming language instead of programming using * * *'s security PLC function blocks.
